Vanillekipferl (vanilla crescent cookies)

These Austrian cookies are a little like shortbread with added almond in the dough and a delicate vanilla flavor. They melt-in-your-mouth and are perfect for a festive cookie plate.

Let’s get started!

Cream together the butter and sugar

01

This helps the sugar dissolve and butter soften, and forms a light base for the cookies.

Add other ingredients and form dough

02

The dough is relatively crumbly, but bring it together with your hands then chill in fridge.

Form dough into crescents

03

Take small pieces of the dough and form them into small crescent shapes with your hands.

Bake!

04

Lay all of the cookies on a lined cookie sheet. Bake until they look dry but are not yet browning,

Dust with vanilla sugar

05

Combine vanilla sugar and powdered sugar to give an aromatic dusting.  Sift it over the cookies while still warm so it sticks.

Perfect to enjoy during the festive season (or whenever you want to make an excuse!)
